EQUESTRIAN VAULTING - what is it?

Vaulting is one of the seven disciplines recognized by the Fédération Equestre Internationale (FEI) for international competition, and is most easily described as gymnastics performed on the back of a moving horse, in harmony with it.

As in many other forms of athletic competition (eg figure skating or gymnastics), participants are judged on both a set of compulsory moves, and in a freestyle competition called a Kür. With a history extending back to Roman sports, vaulting requires the teamwork of the vaulters, horse and lunger, who controls the horse with a lunge line. Vaulters may compete as individuals, in pairs, or as a team.

This is a wonderful sport to introduce children to horses. Only one horse is required for about 8-10 children. They learn to have complete confidence before they have to control the horse. They also learn teamwork early on for competition.

17.3 Ex police horse ILPH Aurora Borelis, commonly known as Rory, easily carries three little ones.

GLENEAGLES VAULTING GROUP now renamed the EAGLES VAULTING GROUP

The Gleneagles Vaulting Group was formed over twelve years ago. Ann Hunt is chairman and head trainer. Vaulting brings together in one sport the disciplines of gymnastics, dance and learning to work with that wonderful animal, the horse.

"I have had the pleasure of watching young people develop in poise and grow in confidence through Vaulting. It is a fantastic team sport where children of different ages learn to work closely together and also to respect their horse."
